Striking, romantic, and wonderfully distinctive, this authentic Art Deco platinum Toi et Moi diamond ring, dating to approximately the 1920s, pairs two natural Old European Cut diamonds in one of the most enduring romantic designs in antique jewelry. Meaning “you and me,” the Toi et Moi style places two diamonds side by side—a beautifully simple expression of two lives joined together.

From above, the ring is pure Art Deco elegance. Two Old European Cut diamonds sit within crisp geometric surrounds edged in delicate milgrain, while beautifully hand-engraved shoulders draw the eye toward the center. The diamonds retain the broad flashes, visible culets, and individual character that make antique hand-cut stones so captivating.

But the most remarkable detail is almost completely hidden.

Turn the ring to the side and the platinum gallery reveals six individually pierced three-leaf shamrocks—three beneath each diamond. It is an extraordinary amount of craftsmanship devoted to a detail that its original wearer would rarely have seen, and exactly the kind of thoughtful construction that makes fine antique jewelry so compelling.

The contrast is wonderful: disciplined Art Deco geometry from above, intricate botanical workmanship beneath, and two old-cut diamonds at the center. More than a century after it was made, the ring remains an exceptionally charming and distinctive example of period craftsmanship—and a particularly beautiful interpretation of the romantic Toi et Moi design.

The Diamonds

The ring is centered by two natural Old European Cut diamonds positioned side by side in the traditional Toi et Moi arrangement. Rather than one stone serving as the dominant center, the diamonds share the composition, giving the ring its characteristic balance and romantic symbolism.

Both diamonds display the personality associated with antique hand cutting. Their broader facet patterns and visible culets create flashes of light that feel distinctly different from the tighter, more uniform scintillation of a modern round brilliant.

The diamonds measure approximately 3.6 mm each and are estimated at approximately 0.50 carat combined based on mounted measurements. Surrounded by bright platinum and fine milgrain, they present beautifully within the setting and form a strong focal point without overwhelming the design's delicacy.  They are evenly matched, with one being slightly warmer than the other.

The Design

The hidden workmanship is what makes this ring particularly special.

Viewed from above, the design is unmistakably Art Deco. Each diamond is framed by a geometric octagonal surround finished with delicate milgrain, creating the crisp symmetry and architectural character associated with 1920s jewelry. Hand engraving continues along the shoulders, softening the geometry as the design transitions into the shank.

From the side, however, the ring reveals an entirely different personality.

Beneath the diamonds are six individually pierced three-leaf shamrocks, with three positioned beneath each stone. Rather than simply being engraved onto the platinum, the shamrocks are incorporated into the open gallery itself, turning part of the ring's supporting architecture into decoration.

It is an unusually thoughtful detail because much of this workmanship disappears when the ring is worn. The original jeweler nevertheless devoted considerable attention to an area intended to be discovered rather than immediately seen.

Whether the shamrocks represented Irish heritage, good fortune, personal symbolism, or simply appealed to the original owner, we can't say. That mystery is part of the ring's charm. What remains is a wonderfully distinctive piece of period craftsmanship and a reminder that some of the finest details in antique jewelry are often hidden beneath the surface.

The unusually specific shamrock motif, combined with the extraordinary amount of workmanship devoted to a detail largely hidden when the ring is worn, suggests this may have been a bespoke or specially commissioned piece. Without surviving documentation, its original story cannot be known with certainty, but this does not feel like an incidental decorative detail. The six carefully incorporated shamrocks appear to have been an intentional and meaningful part of the design.

Condition

This antique ring remains beautifully preserved, particularly considering the delicacy of its construction and more than a century of history.

The pierced shamrock gallery remains remarkably well defined, while the geometric diamond surrounds, fine milgrain, hand engraving, and decorative shoulders retain excellent visual detail.

As expected with authentic antique jewelry, close examination under magnification reveals subtle evidence of age, wear, and hand finishing. These characteristics are consistent with the history and individually crafted nature of the piece and do not detract from its overall presentation.

Photography Note

Photographed under soft-spectrum lighting and high magnification to accurately capture the Old European Cut diamonds, fine milgrain, hand engraving, pierced shamrock gallery, and period construction of the platinum setting.

Antique old-cut diamonds are individually cut and often display considerably more brilliance and broad flashes of light in motion than a still photograph can fully capture. Enlarged images are intended to reveal gemstone characteristics, surface condition, craftsmanship, and construction details beyond what is typically visible during normal viewing.

Condition and Expectations

Many pieces in the TERA Collection are a century old or more. They have been worn, cherished, gifted, celebrated, and carried through generations before arriving here. Gentle wear, subtle signs of age, and the occasional evidence of historic stewardship should be expected and are considered part of the character that makes antique jewelry impossible to replicate.

Our photography is intentionally detailed and often captured at extreme magnification. In many cases, the images reveal details, textures, and tiny imperfections that are difficult or impossible to see during normal wear. This approach reflects our commitment to documenting each piece as completely as possible, ensuring that its condition, craftsmanship, and character are faithfully represented.

The result is simple: when your piece arrives, there should be no surprises. What you see is an authentic record of a jewel's present condition, preserving both its beauty and the story written into it over time.

If a condition issue exceeds what would normally be expected from a piece of its age, it will always be specifically disclosed within the listing.

Because every collector values different details, we are always happy to provide additional photographs, videos, measurements, or condition documentation whenever possible. If there is a particular aspect of a piece you would like to examine more closely, please don't hesitate to ask.

Our hope is simple: that the piece you receive is exactly the piece you expected to receive. We would always rather answer one more question than leave a doubt unanswered.
